Royal Belum & Banding Rainforrest

Located north of Perak state, Malaysia, Belum Valley which cover 300,000 hectares of pristine rainfores is known as Belum Temenggor Forest Complex and consist of several forest reserves area. The main area is the Royal Belum (north) and Temenggor Forest Reserve (south). This rainforest is estimated more than 130 million years and considered as one of the oldest rainforest in the world.

Fishing

Toman (Giant Snakehead) and Sebarau (Jungle Perch) are the target species for lure casting anglers. Other species like Lampam Sungai (Barboides), Kelah (Malaysian Mahseer), Kawan (Friendly Barb), Kalui (Giant Gouramy), Baung are common in Royal Belum.

Wildlife

Beside from fishing, other activities within the state park you can do wonderful nature tours (mainly boat cruises) to spot wildlife like elephants, deer, wild boars, birds, insects and many tropical trees and plants. There are also quite a few endangered animal species that live within the state park; Malaysian tigers, Sumatran rhinoceros, Malaysian sunbear, tapirs and the white-handed gibbon. Chances on an encounter with these great animals are however very slim. It is said to be the only place in Malaysia where you are able to spot all species of the hornbills. Besides, this is also one of the places to visit if you want 'experience' the rafflesia as there are three species of this enormous flower.

Aborigines

Royal Belum experience would not have been complete without a stopover at the Orang Asli (aborigines) village. The gummy smiles of these shorter, dark skinned and curly haired people and their ancient song of welcome done to the rhythmic beats of bamboo shoots (Sewang) warmed our hearts. The Jahais largely depend upon hunting, fishing and gathering jungle products as their source of livelihood.

Accommodation

There are quite a few decent resorts nearby Royal Belum State Park, the resorts are usually located at the shores of Lake Temenggoh. As most resorts are at a distance apart it is not easy to stay at one resort and eat at another resort, you are basicly limited to what the resort has to offer. Rule of thumb is that locals meals are of much better quality than western styled meals. Most popular resorts around Royal Belum State Park are; Belum Rainforest Resort (offers free WIFI in public areas), Belum Eco Resort and the Banding Lake Side Inn.

Another sailfish trip last week. This time our customer is Mr. Victor Seah from Nestle Malaysia with his son Timothy and Dato' T Jasudasen (High Commissioner For Republic Of Singapore). Our first day trip was not so good because of strong wind and the sea was choppy. No sailfish around and we are forced to leave sailfish ground early because of weather condition are getting worst on the evening. On Sunday the sea ondition is getting better and calm. Other than sailfish we caught a nice size Spanish Mackerel and a Queen Fish. Here some picture from our trip.

After few minute we change to another spot and a sailfish taking a bait. This sail give a good fight and jump few time for first few minute until it tangled itself to the mainline.

We got the privilege to be a fishing guide to this nice couple. They came here to try fresh and saltwater fishing in Malaysia. Their first stop was Taman Negara (National Park) in Pahang to try fishing for Jungle Perch/Hampala and Giant Snakehead. After their trip in Taman Negara this couple continue fishing in Rompin. Lake Kenyir Adventure

For enthusiast freshwater angler, Lake Kenyir is home to numerous species of freshwater fishes and exotic wildlife. With a water catchment area of 38,000 hectares, the lake is naturally a haven for freshwater fish. The lake covers 260 km² and contains 340 small islands, which were once hilltops and highlands. 30 rivers and 25 waterfalls feeding into the lake.

Kenyir In Monsoon Season

A recent study revealed that there are some 300 species of freshwater fish dwelling in the lake. The presence of dead trees around the lake serves as a perfect breeding ground for these fishes. Algae growing on dead trees and branches serve as the main form of sustenance for the fishes. Typical species such as the big Lampam Sungai (Barboides), Kelah (Malaysian Mahseer), Toman (Giant Snakehead or Fishzilla), Kawan (Friendly Barb), Kalui (Giant Gouramy) and Kelisa (Green Arowana) are found in waters and around dead trees.

For a full experience fishing in Lake Kenyir, using the Boat House is really recommended to explore more fishing spot rather stay in resort or hotel. Facility in this boat house include Satellite TV, stretcher bed, bathroom & toilet.

Other activities than fishing, A visit to Kelah (Malaysian Mahseer) Sanctuary is a must. The Kelah santuary is located at Sungai Petang. Kelah Sanctuary, covering an area of 4,464 hectares has been gazetted as a protective zone for the protection, preservation and reproductions of the fresh water fish in Tasik Kenyir.

This is an utmost step in ensuring the maintainance of the bio-diversity of the lake. Therefore fishing activities are strictly prohibited here. Visitors will be enjoying an experience they will never forget....seeing the nature at it's best with the magnificient sparkling rivers and rapids along the tracks to Kelah Sanctuary. Visitors will also experience 'close encounter' with various species of fishes including the beautiful red kelah gently biting at their feet while swimming in the magnificient Kelah Sanctuary.

Caving is one more exciting thing you can do at Kenyir Lake. The two caves located there – Bewah and Taat - are rich in history with the finding of pre-historic stone and iron tools, and sea shells. Lots of creepy crawlies abound in the form of bats, cave racers, spiders, crickets and such. Unfortunately, the Bewah Cave is temporarily closed since February this year to facilitate the excavation of ancient artefacts upon the discovery of human skeletal remains believed to be 16,000 years old.

Rompin Sailfish Adventure !

Nestled on the south east coast of the Malaysian peninsular, Kuala Rompin is a unique area offering anglers of all experience and skill levels spectacular sailfish action. The sailfish are drawn to this part of the South China Sea as the warm currents offer them the ideal feeding grounds for the masses of baitfish within this area. Sailfish work in packs hunting these waters for bait schools and their aggressive feeding patterns offer anglers numerous sport fishing opportunities. The warm, calm waters off the coast of Kuala Rompin are ideal for anglers to target quantities of these billfish. In every august the state government are organizing a "Royal Pahang Billfish International Challange" tournament.

Each day you will be collected from the resort and board your vessel for the short run out to the grounds. Here you will use techniques including live baiting, trolling and popper casting to target numerous sailfish in the calm, warm waters. The abundance of sailfish available is such a drawcard to fishing Rompin, it’s common here to have multiple hookups, free jumping fish, and dozens of shots at fish each day. Other species encountered include marlin, cobia, mackeral, trevally and mahi mahi, making Rompin a very exciting light tackle destination. On completion of each days fishing, return to your resort to enjoy the facilities or head into one of the local restaurants to enjoy a meal.

60lb to 80lb leader. Florocarbon leader will be better.

Kuala Rompin is deemed to be the sailfish fishing capital of Asia, it has one of the best fishing grounds in this region. Bookings for this location are required very much in advance in Kuala Rompin due to the popularity of the Sailfish fishing. The sailfish are around from April till October and August to October is regarded as the best time.

Other species:-

April till May you will have other species like the Diamond Trevally (Up to 9kg) and also the Spanish mackerels(Up to 12kg)
Squid are from September till October
Cobia are in all year round
Golden Trevally are in all year round.

Here few picture from our Pulau Jarak jigging & popping trip. But we still manage to land few GT's, grouper, mackeral and golden snapper even though there a large group of anchovies swarming in Pulau Jarak & Pulau Sembilan area.

Pulau Jarak Jigging & Popping

Located 34km southwest of the town of Lumut, Perak, is Pulau Jarak(Jarak Island), Malaysia's top GT jigging & popping destination. This tiny island (barely 8 hectares in size) rises 50m above sea level and is covered with lush vegetation, where many sea eagles nest. There is no beach on Pulau Jarak, only granite sloping down to the sandy sea bed with small patches of stony, encrusting and soft corals. Other than Giant Trevally, Pulau jarak also have abundance of golden snapper, grouper, big eye trevally , cobia and many more species.
